Extra information:
This pendant is crafted from a fragment of a late Victorian transfer-printed earthenware plate, dating to the late nineteenth century. The black geometric border, featuring a harlequin diamond pattern and stylised zigzag notifs, reflects the influence of the Aesthetic Movement, when British potteries embraced bold, Japanese-inspired designs. Produced using the transfer-printing process, these intricate patterns made decorative tableware both affordable and fashionable in Victorian homes. The cream earthenware body and fine crazing on the réverse are characteristic of aged Victorian ceramics. Carefully repurposed into jewellery, the fragment preserves the craftsmanship and decorative style of nineteenth-century British pottery in a unique, wearable form.
