In the late 18th century. European manufactories like Derby adapted Japanese Imari porcelain into luxury English chinaware. By the 1820s, rising working-class demand prompted potteries to simplify these formal patterns into cheaper versions. Potteries hand-painted ceramics using quick, bold brushstrokes in cobalt blue, russet red, green, with metallic accents. Despite the name, most of these colourful pieces were manufactured in English potteries rather than in Wales. The style earned its name because it became very popular for decorating traditional rural Welsh dressers. The descriptor "Gaudy" was actually coined later by 20th-century American collectors noting the vivid colours. Royal Crown Derby elevated the folk aesthetic Today, these historical pieces remain cherished by antique collectors.
